Manchester United assistant coach Carlos Queiroz has questioned David Beckham's dedication to his football career.

Queiroz, who has returned to his old job as assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson after being axed by Real Madrid, was surprised by England captain Beckham's comments about the training regime at the Spanish club last season.

He told Radio Marca: "In the last three weeks of the season Luis Figo was at every training session, while you'll have to look at those that David missed for one motive or another. Figo wasn't skiing while his team was still in the Champions League, and there's the difference - one of them has got to the final and the other didn't."

Queiroz is not willing to be made the scapegoat for Beckham's performances at Euro 2004.

England exited at the quarter-final stage to Figo's Portugal, with Beckham missing his second spot-kick of the tournament in the penalty shoot-out, and the hosts will face Greece in Sunday's final.

"I am not surprised by Beckham's declarations as he has always had excuses," said Queiroz.

"When he failed (at the World Cup) in Korea, and when he failed in Portugal, he always has an excuse."
